Petrol Price in Pakistan Today and What It Means for Your Food Bill
SaveBite Team · 12 Oct 2026
If you have searched "petrol price in Pakistan today" more than once this month, you are not alone. Fuel prices have been revised several times in October alone, and every change shows up somewhere else in your budget: the bus fare, the delivery charge, and above all the cost of food.
This guide explains where petrol and diesel prices stand, why they push food prices up, and what you can actually do about it if you live in Islamabad or Rawalpindi.
As of 10 October 2026, petrol is about Rs398.30 per litre and high speed diesel about Rs396.24 per litre. That is well below the all time record of Rs458.40 for petrol and Rs520.35 for diesel set on 3 April 2026, at the height of the oil shock caused by the war involving Iran and the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.
But compared with a year ago, fuel is still far more expensive. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) weekly price report for the week ending 8 October 2026:
- Petrol is up 47.5% year on year
- Diesel is up 42.5% year on year
- LPG is up 68.6% year on year
Prices change often, so always check the latest OGRA notification before you plan a big trip or a monthly budget.
Most people notice petrol at the pump. Fewer notice it at the grocery store, but it is there in almost every item.
- Transport: wheat, vegetables, chicken and milk travel by truck from farms and mandis to cities. Trucks run on diesel, so every rupee added to diesel is added to the price of food.
- Farming: tractors, tube wells and harvesters burn diesel. Fertiliser production also depends on energy.
- Cooking: restaurants, bakeries and homes pay more for LPG and gas, and that cost is passed on in menu prices.
- Delivery: food delivery charges rise when riders pay more for petrol.
The same PBS report shows the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) rose 0.57% in a single week and is running at about 12% higher than a year ago. A few staples stand out:
- Wheat flour: a 20 kg bag rose to about Rs2,851, up 5.7% in one week and around 33% higher than a year ago (Rs2,150).
- Chicken: up 4.9% in one week to about Rs383 per kg.
- Onions: roughly double their price a year ago.
- Tomatoes: up 2.4% in one week.
Not everything is rising. Bananas, potatoes and sugar became slightly cheaper in the same week, and diesel dipped a little. But the overall direction is clear: essentials cost much more than they did last October.
How to eat well for less when fuel is expensive
You cannot control the petrol price, but you can control how much fuel and money goes into each meal.
1. Combine trips and pick up on the way
Plan food pickups on routes you already drive, like the commute home from office or university. One combined trip uses far less petrol than several separate ones.
2. Skip delivery fees when you can
Delivery charges rise with fuel. Picking up your own order, especially from a place on your way, saves the delivery fee every time.
3. Rescue surplus food at a discount
Every evening, restaurants and bakeries in Islamabad and Rawalpindi have good food left over that they cannot sell the next day. On SaveBite, they list that surplus at up to 70% off. You reserve it in the app, pick it up during the pickup window, and show a QR code at the counter. There is no delivery fee, and the food gets eaten instead of thrown away.
4. Buy staples in bulk, but only what you will use
Bulk atta and rice save money, but only if nothing spoils. Store flour in an airtight container and check dates before you buy.
5. Cook once, eat twice
Cooking larger batches saves gas, and leftovers make tomorrow's lunch. Freeze portions you will not eat within two days.
